Artist statement

monika fischbein (b. 1977, budapest) is a visual artist, educator, consultant and project manager. she has been based in the uk since the age of 19. she has been educated at central saint martins college of art & design, the university of greenwich and linköping university.

Her background is in photography, identity and cultural studies with over 11 years of experience teaching in higher education. Her work has featured frequently in international solo exhibitions, conferences and workshops.

Fischbein worked at UAL, PCA, FU, BCU as well as a visiting lecturer at MOME (Hungary), HS-ANHALT (Germany), UHM & ESDA (Spain). Her previous photographic and research work centred on the idea of national identity, resulting in a series titled “National Still Life” a personal monograph; and “The National Identity Project” a community outreach investigation in collaboration with Fotonow CIC. Both works are based on her extensive experience of, experimentation with, and reflection on identity and the sense of belonging.

At present, Fischbein’s work uses an interdisciplinary approach and it focuses on esotericism, mysticism and their manifestation in imaging; moreover it investigates its place in personal and universal connections and purpose in contemporary culture.
